Your First Credit Card

June 1, 2007

There is a lot to consider when it comes to getting your first credit card. Although this may not seem like a big deal, it is actually a huge step in your life. Remember, the credit that you begin to build right now will affect you for many years to come. If you get off to a good start you will be in a great position when it comes time to make major purchases such as a car or home.

So what should you consider when getting your first credit card? Listed below are three tips that will allow you to get the credit card that is best for you and your financial situation.

1. There is no reason that your credit card needs to have a high limit. And in most cases, you will not qualify for one if you are a first timer. So many people get caught up in their credit limit that they forget about all the other details. Find a good credit card, and let the company determine your limit. Over time, this will begin to increase as long as you stay in good standing.

2. Consider the special offers that are available. For instance, many credit cards come with 0 percent APR for the first year or so. This is a great idea because it means that you can carry balances from one month to the next without having to pay interest.

3. Make sure that you use your credit card sparingly from the start. You do not want to get in the habit of buying things with your credit card that you cannot afford to pay for later on. Instead, only use your credit card for things that you know you can pay off within a month or two. As you become more experienced you will then be able to move away from this.

As you can see, your first credit card is a huge deal. As long as you are responsible with your credit, and follow the tips above, you should not run into any problems.
