What to Look For In Credit Card Deals or Specials

How many times do we leaf through a stack of mail to find credit card offers? Pre-approval notices from each company promise us great rewards, money-saving programs, and lots of perks. How does a consumer separate one company from the next? What should we look for in credit card deals and specials?

When wading through the deluge of companies offering credit cards, it's important to actually read the fine print and find out what the company is offering. The first thing to avoid is up-front fees. Some companies offer annual fees. Since there are so many other companies who don't charge consumers these fees, you would do better to choose another company.

The second thing to remember when shopping for your new credit card is that you want to pay close attention to your interest rates. Many credit card companies offer a one year introductory special where the customer does not pay interest for the first year. This is great because you can make your minimum payment, and if you pay off the card balance within 12 months, you'll pay no fees. Check your fine print and see if the company offers 0% balance transfers for the first year. This means that you can transfer balances from a high interest credit card to your new card, making it easier to pay off old debts.

Other things you may want to check for are special programs. Some credit card companies offer cash back programs, frequent flyer miles, or other rewards programs. When choosing your credit card, you need to select one that has a program that is catered toward your individual needs. If you travel a lot, you might benefit from a card that offers you free frequent flyer miles each time you make a purchase. Maybe you'd rather receive 5% cash back every time you make a purchase. If neither of these options appeal to you, many companies offer other rewards programs.

When considering accepting a card from any company, the most important thing to remember is to read the literature they send. Don't simply skim it. Familiarize yourself with the rewards, benefits, and overall scope of the program. Then make an informed decision of the best card for your individual needs.
