Spring Cleaning: Cleaning Up Your Debt

With spring in the air, it has everyone in the mood for cleaning up their homes, and getting ready for the New Year in full blast. Recently CNN.com had an article that was titled “Spring clean your finances by updating budget, digging out of debt”. This article talks about spring also being a great time to clean up your budget, finances and get out of debt.

The articles starts out by talking about eliminating as much paper as possible while you are cleaning up your finances. This is a great clutter reducer and will help you keep better track if you can keep electronic records. If you begin cleaning up your finances this early in the year, it will make things so much easier on you later on in the year.

Be sure that you get a copy of your credit report. Make notes of things to fix and change and make sure that you challenge anything that is inaccurate. The article states that this will make things easier for you in the event that you want to make a major purchase in the next year.

They also state that spring cleaning of your finances is also a great time to revisit your budget. Cutting out anything extra and reducing your spending is easier when you start off in the spring. That will also free up money so that you can pay down your debt.

Be sure that you also clean up your 401K. In the event that you have one, this is a good time for you to look into more investing options. If you can just start with 1 or 2 percent, chances are that you will never miss it. But even just that small of an amount will make a huge difference long term.

This is also a good time to look back over your huge life goals as stated in the article. Make sure that you are still on the right track and be sure that they are still something you are looking forward to.

Spring cleaning your finances along with your home will help you make sure that you are on the right track for the year. Don’t forget to revisit your budget and make plans of cutting down your debt for the year as well. Be sure that you get a free credit report also so that you know just what is on your credit report and what needs to be taken off to raise the score.
