Is it safe to apply online for a credit card?

When you make an online credit card application, most online credit card application companies, banks, and other lending institutions use a sophisticated technology known as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology for the online service. So, whenever you're giving personal or confidential information for an online credit card application—really, whenever you apply for a credit card—the SSL technology encodes or encrypts the information on your online credit card application so it travels securely from your computer to the credit card company. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer support SSL technology and when you apply online for a credit card, a small padlock icon should be visible in one of the lower corners of your browser's window.

Will my online credit card application information be shared with anyone other than the financial institution?

Every reputable website maintains a privacy statement. It's always advisable, when you apply online for a credit card, to read and understand how the personal information you've submitted in making your online credit card application might be used. It's unusual, but not impossible, that some sites may share certain aspects of your information with trusted affiliates. To protect your credit card application information from company employees, most websites limit physical access to your credit information to only approved employees. Online, companies install firewalls and other electronic or procedural safeguards. Generally, you can be assured your online credit card application is being handled with a number of safeguards in place to ensure your privacy and protection.

That being said, however, there are some precautions you should always take:

  • Never send personal or confidential information via email. Email is not encrypted or encoded and can be intercepted and stolen from you.
  • Never share your user ID or passwords with anyone.
  • Always be cautious online when you're accessing personal banking systems—or applying for a credit card online—and be sure you log out of your sessions and close your browser window when you're done.

Sensible precautions combined with common sense are your best protection when it comes to protecting your personal credit card application information.
