Many people often wonder, “Can my old credit card debt come back to haunt me?” The simple and obvious answer is, YES! Not only can it come back, it most likely will come back. But, the scarier aspect is the debt collectors that are beginning to bring back up old debt. Some debt collectors are going into the archive to pull back up debts that are five or even ten years old and are hitting completely unsuspecting people with bills for these debts. Dealing with these old debts can be tricky and can bite you hard if you deal with them incorrectly.

The important thing to do with old debt is to first find out what your own state law is the length of the statute of limitations on the debt. Find out how long you can actually be taken to court over debt. If the time has passed, you may still feel obligated to pay back the debt, but technically the debtor will have no leverage with which to sue you or to actually obtain the money from you which is owed.
